When Do Many Things Become One Thing? Many things become one meaningful whole when the relationships among them create a capability, identity, or purpose that the individual parts could not produce alone. Imagine every component of a bicycle spread across a garage floor. The wheels, pedals, chain, handlebars, frame, and brakes are all present, but the collection cannot yet be ridden. Connect the components in the right arrangement, and the same parts acquire a new collective capability. Nothing mysterious has been added to the individual components. The important change is how they are connected and how those connections allow the components to function together. The bicycle illustrates a principle that extends to teams, organizations, communities, and systems of many kinds.
